About this service
Marine Fuel Injector Cleaning, Testing and Repair
Fuel injectors meter fuel into the engine as a fine spray. On a boat they foul faster than on a car: fuel sits in the tank between trips, ethanol blends take on water, and deposits build up at the injector tips. We clean, test and repair fuel injectors on gasoline and diesel marine engines at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or in our San Pedro shop.
Signs your injectors need attention
- A rough or uneven idle, or an engine that stalls when you shift into gear
- Hesitation or a flat spot when you open the throttle
- Hard starting, especially after the boat has been sitting
- More fuel used for the same trip
- A raw-fuel smell (shut the engine off, ventilate and do not restart it until the fuel system is checked), smoke at the exhaust or a misfire code on an EFI engine
What the work covers
We start with a diagnosis, so the injectors are not blamed for an ignition, air or fuel pressure fault. On EFI and MPI engines we read the engine computer for stored codes and check the fuel pressure; that is also offered on its own as MPI and EFI system diagnostics. The injectors then come out to be cleaned and tested, so a weak or leaking one shows up before it goes back in. Worn O-rings and filter baskets are replaced, and an injector that cannot be restored is quoted for replacement before any work goes ahead.
Diesel engines have their own fuel injection work, from injectors to injection pump timing and calibration. Water or dirt in the fuel usually starts further back in the system, which is where fuel polishing and filtration comes in.
Keeping injectors clean
Fresh fuel, a stabilizer when the boat will sit, and fuel filters and water separators changed on your engine maker's schedule do the most to keep injectors clean. Running the engine regularly helps as well.
Book a visit: submit a ticket with the engine make and model, its hours and what you are noticing, or call (213) 693-0224.
