Boat Engine Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro
We find and fix boat engine problems, from hard starting and overheating to lost power. We work on Mercury, MerCruiser, Yamaha, Volvo Penta, Indmar, Yanmar and Cummins engines at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop.
What the work covers
- Diagnosis and repair: marine engine repair starts with finding the cause, tracing the problem through fuel, ignition, compression and cooling.
- Overheating: overheating diagnosis and a cooling system flush. Common causes are a worn raw-water impeller, a clogged heat exchanger, a stuck thermostat or scale in the cooling passages.
- Exhaust: exhaust riser and elbow replacement when corrosion or leaks put the engine at risk of taking on water.
- Scheduled service: a 100-hour service or annual engine maintenance at your engine maker's interval. It typically covers oil and filters, fuel filters, the impeller and belts, plus a look at hoses, clamps and anodes.
- Valves and compression: valve adjustment and compression testing. Many engines need valve clearance set on a schedule, and compression numbers show the condition of the rings and valves.
When to call
- The engine cranks but will not start, or starts and dies
- The temperature gauge climbs or the overheat alarm sounds
- Rough idle, misfires or hesitation when you throttle up
- Lost top speed or RPM
- Smoke, a new noise or a fuel smell; with a fuel smell, leave the engine off and air out the boat
Questions about boat engine repair
Can you check my engine where the boat is kept?
Yes. We come to your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach. If the check turns up a repair, we quote it before any work is done.
When does a repair turn into a rebuild?
When a compression test and inspection show wear across the engine, such as low compression on several cylinders, heavy oil use or damage from water or overheating. In that case we explain the rebuild option and quote it.
Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, where it is kept and what the engine is doing, or call (562) 542-7296.

#950 Common question asks
Can regular maintenance improve engine performance?
-

It keeps an engine running as it should: fresh oil, clean fuel filters, a good impeller and correct plugs help it start easily, run smoothly and hold its temperature. Maintenance will not add power beyond what the engine was built for, but it lowers the risk of breakdowns and helps the engine last.
-
-

#948 Common question asks
Do you provide a maintenance report after the service?
-

Yes. After the service you get a written record of everything inspected and replaced, plus our recommendations, to track engine health. Keep it with your records: maintenance by an independent shop does not by itself void the engine warranty, but coverage decisions are made by the engine maker.
-
-

#946 Common question asks
Does the service include fuel system maintenance?
-

Yes, we inspect and replace fuel filters, clean injectors or carburetors if necessary, and check fuel lines for leaks or damage. This helps maintain engine efficiency and prevents fuel-related issues.
-
-

#944 Common question asks
How often should I schedule a 100-hour service?
-

Most engine makers call for it every 100 operating hours or once a year, whichever comes first; your owner's manual has the exact schedule for your engine. Boats in heavy use or salt water may need some items checked more often.
-
-

#942 Common question asks
Do you perform inspections on all engine components?
-

We check the fuel, cooling, lubrication and electrical systems from the outside for wear, corrosion and leaks, and scan EFI engines for stored fault codes. It is a maintenance check, not an internal engine inspection; anything that needs attention is reported to you with a price before any work.
-
-

#940 Common question asks
Why is annual engine maintenance important?
-

Annual maintenance lowers the risk of a breakdown on the water and helps the engine last. Oil, impellers and anodes wear even when the boat sits, and regular checks catch small problems before they become costly repairs.
-
-

#938 Common question asks
What is included in a 100-hour service for my boat engine?
-

A 100-hour service covers engine oil and oil filter, fuel filters and water separator, the raw-water impeller (inspected or replaced), lower unit gear lube or transmission fluid, zinc anodes and, on gasoline engines, spark plugs, plus a fault-code scan on EFI engines, a check of belts, hoses and electrical connections, and a test run. The exact list follows your engine maker's schedule, and parts are itemized in your written estimate.

-

#936 Common question asks
Can a cooling system flush improve engine performance?
-

Yes, removing blockages and corrosion restores proper water flow and engine temperature regulation, which helps maintain power, efficiency, and prolongs the life of your engine.
-
-

#934 Common question asks
Do you inspect other components during the flush?
-

Yes. We check hoses, clamps, impellers, thermostats and exhaust risers for wear or damage. Anything at risk is reported to you with a price and replaced only with your OK.
-
-

#932 Common question asks
Can flushing the cooling system prevent engine damage?
-

It helps. Regular flushing removes corrosive deposits and keeps water flowing, which lowers the risk of overheating, corrosion and premature wear of parts like the water pump and heat exchanger.
