Boat Ignition Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro
We find and fix ignition problems on gasoline boat engines, from worn spark plugs and distributor parts to electronic ignition faults. We work at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop.
What the work covers
- Diagnosis and repair: ignition system repair covers spark plugs, plug wires, coils, distributors, ignition modules and the wiring between them.
- Tune-up parts: distributor cap, rotor and spark plug replacement on engines that have a distributor.
- Electronic engines: ECM scanning reads fault codes and live data from the engine's computer, so we can see what the engine has been reporting.
Marine ignition parts are built to be ignition protected, so a spark inside them cannot set off fuel vapor in the engine compartment. Automotive parts can look the same without that protection. Parts are quoted with the job.
Signs of an ignition problem
- The engine cranks but will not start
- Misfires, or a miss that shows up under load
- Rough idle or stalling
- Backfiring or popping
- Spark plugs that foul again soon after replacement
Questions about boat ignition repair
What if the engine will not crank at all?
If the engine does not turn over, the problem is usually in the starting circuit: the battery, cables, neutral safety switch or starter. See boat starter repair. Ignition faults usually show up as an engine that cranks and will not start.
How often should spark plugs be replaced?
Follow your engine maker's interval. Old plugs that come out oily, wet or white also show how the engine is running, which helps with diagnosis.
Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, where it is kept and what the engine is doing, or call (562) 542-7296.

-

#1114 Emily, sailboat owner in Newport Beach asks asks
Do marine engines require special spark plugs?
-

Yes, marine engines use corrosion-resistant, ignition-protected spark plugs designed for the marine environment. We install OEM or equivalent marine-grade components only.

#1112 Jason, motorboat owner in Long Beach asks asks
What is included in your ignition system replacement service?
-

We replace the distributor cap, rotor, and spark plugs, inspect ignition wires, set proper gaps, and test the system to ensure strong spark and smooth engine operation.

#1110 Sophia, yacht owner in Newport Beach asks asks
Can worn ignition components cause engine damage?
-

Yes, prolonged misfires can lead to unburned fuel, overheating, and damage to exhaust components. Replacing worn ignition parts early helps protect the engine and maintain reliability.

#1108 Daniel, fishing boat owner in Long Beach asks asks
Is replacing the distributor cap and rotor part of routine maintenance?
-

Yes, these components are considered wear items and are typically replaced during annual service or every 100–200 engine hours, depending on manufacturer recommendations and operating conditions.

#1106 Olivia, cruiser owner in Newport Beach asks asks
How do I know when spark plugs need to be replaced?
-

Signs include hard starting, rough idle, loss of power, increased fuel consumption, or engine misfires. Regular replacement ensures efficient combustion and smooth engine operation.

#1104 Mark, motorboat owner in Long Beach asks asks
What does the distributor cap and rotor do in a marine engine?
-

The distributor cap and rotor direct electrical current from the ignition coil to the correct spark plug at the right time. Worn components can cause misfires, poor starting, and reduced engine performance.

#1102 Tyler, boat owner in Long Beach asks asks
Do you provide a report after ECM diagnostics?
-

Yes, after scanning we provide a clear diagnostic report outlining fault codes, findings, and recommended repairs or adjustments. This documentation helps with maintenance planning and warranty records.

#1100 Jasmine, motorboat owner in Newport Beach asks asks
Is ECM scanning safe for all marine engines?
-

Yes, ECM scanning is non-invasive and safe for most modern marine engines, including MPI, EFI, and diesel systems. It does not affect engine settings unless authorized adjustments are required.

-

#1098 Caleb, sailboat owner in Long Beach asks asks
Can ECM scanning improve engine performance and efficiency?
-

Absolutely. By identifying incorrect sensor readings or timing issues, ECM diagnostics help restore proper engine operation, improving fuel efficiency, throttle response, and overall reliability.
