About this service
Marine Engine Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro
We diagnose and repair inboard and outboard boat engines, gasoline and diesel, at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop. We work on Mercury, MerCruiser, Yamaha, Volvo Penta, Indmar, Yanmar and Cummins engines.
What the work covers
Marine engine repair starts with finding the cause, so we work through the engine in order before we replace anything:
- Fuel: filters, water separators, pumps, carburetors or injectors, and the condition of the fuel itself.
- Ignition: spark plugs, wires, coils and timing on gasoline engines.
- Compression: a compression test shows the condition of the rings, valves and head gaskets.
- Cooling: water flow, impeller, thermostats and exhaust risers. For an engine that runs hot, see overheating diagnosis and a cooling system flush.
- Electronics: on fuel-injected and electronically controlled engines, ECM scanning reads stored fault codes and live sensor data.
Once we know the cause, we quote the repair before any work is done, and parts are quoted with the job. After the repair we run the engine to confirm the fix. A sea trial shows problems that only appear under load.
When to call
- Hard starting, or no start at all
- Stalling at idle or when you shift into gear
- Misfiring, surging or hesitation under throttle
- Lower top RPM than normal
- A warning light, an alarm or a fault code on the display
- Smoke, a new knock or tick, or a fuel smell (with a fuel smell, ventilate and do not start the engine)
Questions about marine engine repair
Do you repair diesel engines?
Yes. Many inboards on larger boats and yachts are diesels, and we work on Yanmar, Cummins and Volvo Penta diesels as well as gasoline engines. When a diesel is worn past repair, see diesel engine rebuilds.
What should I tell you when I book?
The engine make and model, the approximate hours, when it was last serviced and what it does. Say when the problem shows up: cold or hot, at idle or under load. If the display shows a fault code, a photo of it helps.
Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, where it is kept and what the engine is doing, or call (213) 693-0224.
