Marine Fuel Injector Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro

We test, clean and repair fuel injection on gasoline and diesel boat engines, from MPI and EFI gas engines to diesel injectors and injection pumps. We work at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop.

What the work covers

  • Injector cleaning and restoration: fuel injector repair covers testing the injectors, cleaning the ones that can be saved and replacing the ones that cannot. Parts are quoted with the job.
  • Gas MPI and EFI engines: MPI and EFI system diagnostics. We check fuel pressure, read fault codes and look at sensors and wiring to find the cause.
  • Diesel injection: diesel injection pump timing and calibration. Timing or fuel delivery that is off can cause hard starting, smoke and lost power. We set the pump timing on the engine; calibration or a rebuild of the pump is done by a diesel injection shop we work with or refer you to, and their charge is listed on your estimate.

Many injection problems start with the fuel. Gas that sits for months can leave varnish in injectors, and water or dirt in diesel fuel can wear injectors and pumps. Clean fuel and fresh filters protect the system.

Signs of an injector problem

  • Hard starting or a rough idle
  • Misfires or hesitation when you open the throttle
  • Black smoke or a new knock on a diesel
  • Fuel use that keeps climbing, or a fuel smell; if you smell raw fuel, leave the engine off and air out the boat
  • A warning light or fault code on an EFI engine

Questions about fuel injector repair

Can injectors be cleaned, or do they need replacing?

Often they can be cleaned and tested. An injector that is worn, cracked or leaking needs replacing. We test first and quote the work before any of it is done.

Is it the injectors or the fuel pump?

Both can cause hesitation and lost power. A fuel pressure test helps tell them apart. If pressure is low, the problem may be the pump or a clogged filter. See fuel pump repair.

    #992 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

Can diesel injection pump calibration improve fuel efficiency?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

If the timing was off, yes: correct timing helps the engine burn its fuel completely, which can lower fuel use, smoke and wear. If the timing was already on spec, adjusting it will not save fuel.

    #990 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

Do you test the engine after pump calibration?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

Yes. After setting the timing we start and run the engine, check the idle and the exhaust smoke, and run it in gear to confirm it pulls cleanly.

    #988 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

How often should I check my diesel injection pump timing?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

Pump timing does not usually change on its own, so follow your engine maker's maintenance schedule. Have it checked whenever the injection pump, timing belt or timing gears have been removed or replaced, and when the engine starts hard, smokes heavily, knocks or loses power.

    #986 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

Can improper timing damage my engine?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

Yes, incorrect timing can cause knocking, overheating, excessive wear and even catastrophic failure. That is why timing is set with the proper tools to the engine maker's specification, never by ear.

  5. User avatar

    #984 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

What are the signs that my injection pump needs adjustment?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

Common signs include hard starting, rough idling, heavy smoke, knocking, poor fuel economy or reduced power. The same signs can come from injectors, air in the fuel or a restricted air intake, so we check those before adjusting the pump.

    #982 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

How is a diesel injection pump calibrated?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

We check and set the pump timing on the engine to the engine maker's specification, using the timing marks and the proper tools, then run the engine to confirm it starts easily, idles smoothly and runs clean. Fuel-delivery calibration is bench work for a diesel injection shop: if your pump needs it, we remove it, the shop calibrates it, and we reinstall and time the pump when it comes back. Engines with electronic common-rail injection have no pump timing to set; the engine computer controls it.

    #980 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

What is diesel injection pump timing and why is it important?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

Injection pump timing sets the moment fuel is injected into each cylinder, relative to the piston position. Correct timing gives clean combustion and full power; wrong timing causes hard starting, smoke, knocking and, in bad cases, engine damage.

    #978 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

Are MPI and EFI diagnostics safe for my engine?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

Yes. Reading fault codes and live data does not change anything on the engine. Which makes and model years we can connect to depends on the engine, so tell us the make, model and year when you book and we will confirm before we come.

  9. User avatar

    #976 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

    Can diagnostics improve engine performance?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

Diagnostics alone change nothing, but fixing what they find, such as a faulty sensor or a fuel delivery problem, can bring back lost power and fuel economy.

    #974 Common question asks Dec 17, 2025

How often should MPI & EFI systems be checked?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 17, 2025

We recommend a check at the annual or 100-hour service, especially for saltwater boats, and sooner if a warning light comes on or the engine runs rough. Regular checks help catch fuel delivery and sensor problems early.
