About this service
Volvo Penta
Drive Service.
IPS pods and sterndrives are complex systems that need careful, by-the-book service. We read fault codes with marine diagnostic tools and follow Volvo Penta's maintenance schedule and specifications to keep your propulsion system in good working order.
Fault Code Diagnostics
When a warning light comes on, we read the fault codes from your EVC (Electronic Vessel Control) system with a marine diagnostic tool and check the sensors and wiring behind them. Software updates and calibrations that need Volvo Penta's dealer software are done by a Volvo Penta dealer.
IPS Pod Service
We service the Inboard Performance System (IPS): replacing the dual forward-facing props, servicing the steering actuators and replacing the pod seals. Prop and seal work is done with the boat hauled out.
Sterndrive Care
For Aquamatic (SX/DPS) owners, we handle the essentials: sterndrive bellows replacement, gimbal bearing service, and DuoProp cone clutch adjustment for smooth shifting and a watertight drive. Drive, bellows and gimbal bearing work is done with the boat out of the water; haul-out and yard charges are listed on your estimate.
The Service Standard.
Following the factory maintenance schedule.
Digital Health Check
We begin every service by connecting a diagnostic tool to check engine hours, stored fault codes and sensor data, to spot issues before they become failures.
Fluid & Filter Tech
We use only genuine Volvo Penta filters and synthetic oils. For IPS drives, we change the gear oil and inspect the magnetic plugs for metal shavings.
Seal Integrity
A leaking pod seal can sink a boat. We pressure test the drive units to ensure the shaft seals and O-rings are holding tight against seawater intrusion.
Sea Trial
After service, we perform a sea trial to check the joystick docking system and verify that the EVC system is communicating correctly with the drives.
Complex Systems, Simplified.

Common Questions
Do I need a Volvo Penta dealer?
For routine maintenance and most repairs, no. We follow Volvo Penta's maintenance schedule and give you dated invoices, which help if you ever make a warranty claim. Warranty repairs and software updates that need Volvo Penta's dealer system go to a Volvo Penta dealer.
How often do IPS seals need changing?
Volvo Penta's maintenance schedule for your drive sets when the seals are inspected and replaced. We check them at every service and recommend replacement at that interval, or sooner if the gear oil shows water.
Volvo Sterndrive Service and IPS Care
Volvo Penta marine service starts with a digital health check. We connect a diagnostic tool to your EVC system to review engine hours, stored fault codes and sensor data, then follow the factory maintenance schedule with genuine Volvo Penta filters and synthetic oils. For IPS drives we change the gear oil, inspect the magnetic plugs for metal shavings and pressure test the drive units to confirm the seals are holding.
Volvo sterndrive service for Aquamatic SX, DPS and DPH drives covers bellows replacement, gimbal bearing service and DuoProp cone clutch adjustment, done with the boat out of the water. When you book, tell us your drive model, engine hours, when the seals or bellows were last replaced, and any fault codes you have seen. After service, we sea-trial the boat to check the joystick docking system and confirm the EVC system is communicating with the drives.
How do I compare Volvo Penta marine repair shops near me?
Distance is only part of the choice. Automotive OBD scanners cannot read marine codes, so ask whether the mechanic uses a marine diagnostic tool, follows the factory maintenance schedule, works on the drive only with the boat out of the water and sea-trials the boat after service.
Also ask what IPS drive part service includes. It should cover the parts that wear: the dual forward-facing props, the steering actuators and the pod seals, plus a gear oil change and a check of the magnetic plugs for metal shavings, which can be an early sign of trouble inside the drive.
