Can you troubleshoot a no-start issue directly at the marina?

Yes. We come to your boat at its slip from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM. Many starting problems can be found and fixed at the dock, often avoiding a tow. A trip fee by distance applies, and a diagnosis is at least $300 for each engine and $300 for the electrical system.

What are the most common causes of an engine not starting?

Common causes include weak or dead batteries, corroded wiring, faulty starter solenoids, neutral safety switch failures, ignition problems, fuel delivery issues, or ECU-related faults. Our troubleshooting process isolates the issue efficiently.

Can you start the engine temporarily if parts are needed?

Sometimes. If a safe temporary fix will get you going until the part arrives, such as charging or jump-starting a weak battery or cleaning a corroded connection, we do it and tell you what still needs repair. Safety devices such as the kill switch and the neutral safety switch are never disconnected or defeated; a faulty one is replaced.

Is no-start troubleshooting safe for modern engines?

Yes. We follow the engine maker's service-manual test procedures, read fault codes on EFI engines with a scan tool, and do not use jumper wiring or shortcuts that could damage the electronics.

Do you provide a report after diagnosing the issue?

Yes, after troubleshooting, we provide a clear explanation of the cause, recommended repairs, and estimated costs. This helps you make informed decisions and plan further service if required.

Is there a warranty on the repair?

Repairs are covered by our 90-day workmanship warranty from the invoice date, and replaced parts carry their manufacturer's warranty. A diagnosis is at least $300 for each engine and $300 for the electrical system.

The "No Crank"

Silence when you turn the key? We check the "Start Circuit"—batteries, kill switches, neutral safety switches, and starter solenoids.

The "Crank, No Start"

The engine turns over but won't start? This is usually Fuel or Spark. A fuel pressure test and a check of ignition coil output isolate the missing variable.

Computer Scan

For modern outboards and EFI inboards, we connect a diagnostic scan tool to read fault codes and sensor data in real time.

Electrical

Voltage is the heartbeat. We load-test batteries and check for voltage drop at the starter to rule out power issues.

Boats sit in a harsh environment. Corrosion can grow on a ground wire in days, or ethanol fuel can separate and clog injectors while sitting.

Can you fix it at the dock?

Many no-start problems (batteries, sensors, filters, fuses) can be fixed at the dock without hauling the boat, once you approve the written estimate.

Quick Checks When Your Outboard Won't Start

Before you call, make sure the kill switch lanyard is clipped in, the shifter is fully in neutral and the battery switch is on. If the engine still will not start, note whether you hear a click, a slow crank or a normal crank with no fire. That detail tells us where to begin the diagnosis at your dock. If you smell raw fuel, stop: do not crank the engine, ventilate the boat and have it checked.
