About this service

Boat Paint Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro

We repair chips, scratches, scuffs and peeling paint on painted hulls and decks at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop. We look at the damage first and tell you if a touch-up will do or a wider area needs repainting.

What the work covers

We clean the area and remove the wax, since paint will not stick to it. Then we sand out the damage, fill gouges, prime bare spots and apply paint matched to the color around the repair.

  • Touch-ups: chips and scratches around the bow, rub rail, transom and other spots that meet the dock. Sealing chips early keeps water off the surface underneath.
  • Spot and panel repairs: peeling or bubbling paint taken back to sound paint. Some two-part topside paints are hard to blend in a small spot, so the repair may run to a natural line such as a stripe.
  • Damage underneath: cracks or soft spots in the fiberglass are repaired before any paint goes on, small ones through fiberglass and gelcoat repair; structural damage is referred to a boatyard.
  • Below the waterline: worn antifouling is handled as bottom painting and antifouling, which needs the boat out of the water.

On a gelcoat finish with no paint, see gelcoat color matching and scratch restoration. Some marinas limit sanding and painting in the slip, so larger areas may need a storage yard or our shop. Materials are quoted with the job.

When to call

  • Chips or scrapes that show primer, fiberglass or bare metal
  • Paint that peels, flakes, bubbles or lifts at the edges
  • Wide chalky or faded areas that stay dull after washing

Questions about boat paint repair

Does a scratch mean the boat needs a full repaint?

Rarely. Scratches, chips and small blemishes can usually be touched up with matched paint, which is quicker and costs less than a new paint job. Wide areas of chalky, peeling or heavily faded paint are usually better repainted.

Will the repair show?

Small touch-ups on a solid color often blend well. Metallic and faded paint is harder to match. If a repair is likely to show, we tell you before we start.

Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, where it is kept and where the damage is, or call (213) 693-0224.
