Yes. Trailer boats up to 26 ft are painted at our San Pedro shop for $55 a foot of boat length, paint included. Sailboats, powerboats and yachts that are bigger or kept in the water get a written quote, and the work is done at a boatyard. We match the paint to the hull and to how the boat is used.

Can you haul out my boat or work with the yard I choose?

We don't haul boats ourselves. Trailer boats up to 26 ft come to our San Pedro shop ($55 a foot, paint included). For a boat in the water we work at a boatyard in San Pedro, Wilmington, Long Beach or Marina del Rey, or at the yard you prefer if it allows outside contractors; the haul-out and yard charges are yours and are listed on your written quote.

What type of antifouling paint suits Southern California waters?

In Southern California marinas we usually recommend a copper-based ablative or hybrid antifouling paint, which resists the barnacles, algae and slime that grow in warm Pacific water. Racing and fast boats usually get a hard paint.

How often should I repaint the bottom of my boat?

Most boats need bottom paint every 12–24 months, depending on usage, water conditions, and whether the boat stays in the slip year-round.

Do you sand, prep, and repair the hull before painting?

Yes. Our $55-a-foot bottom job (trailer boats up to 26 ft at our San Pedro shop, paint included) covers washing, scraping, light sanding and two coats of ablative antifouling. Stripping old paint, blister repair, a barrier coat, zinc replacement and prop or shaft work are quoted separately after we see the hull, and nothing is done without your OK.

Yes. We can use low-VOC, eco-friendly antifouling paints that are legal for use in California, which suit marinas with strict environmental rules.

Do you offer prop speed, running gear coating, and zinc anode service?

Yes. During a bottom job we can coat props, shafts and struts with a foul-release coating such as PropSpeed and replace the zinc anodes. These are quoted separately from the $55-a-foot price.

Our Antifouling Process

A bottom paint job is only as good as the preparation. We follow a set procedure for good adhesion and a long-lasting coat.

Hull Preparation & Sanding

We pressure wash the hull, scrape off loose and flaking paint and lightly sand the old paint so the new coat bonds well. Stripping old paint down to the gelcoat is a separate job, quoted on its own.

Epoxy Barrier Coats

For hulls with blisters, we open and dry the blisters, fill and fair them, then apply an epoxy barrier coat that greatly reduces water getting into the laminate. This is quoted separately.

Paint Application

We use quality paints from makers such as Pettit, Interlux and Sea Hawk, suited to California waters. Our $55-a-foot price includes two coats of Ablative (self-polishing) paint; Hard Epoxy Paints for racing and fast boats are quoted on request.

Running Gear Protection

We don't forget the props and shafts. They can get a foul-release coating such as PropSpeed, which makes it harder for growth to stick. It is quoted separately from the bottom job.

Boat Bottom Painting: What to Expect
