Boat Carburetor Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro
We clean, rebuild and tune marine carburetors at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop. That includes older Mercury and Yamaha outboards and carbureted MerCruiser and Volvo Penta sterndrives.
What the work covers
A marine carburetor rebuild and tuning takes the carburetor apart, clears the jets and fuel passages, replaces gaskets and worn parts, and sets it up again on the engine. Parts are quoted with the job. Related work:
- Marine carburetor cleaning and rebuilding for varnish deep in the small passages
- Idle speed and mixture optimization for an even idle and a clean pickup
- Multi-carb synchronization and tuning for engines with more than one carburetor
- Choke system adjustment and repair for hard cold starts
- Carburetor jetting for altitude or performance, useful if you trailer the boat to a lake at elevation
- Fuel water separator installation to stop water and dirt before they reach the carburetor
Signs your carburetor needs work
- Hard starting, or the engine runs only with the choke on
- Rough idle, or stalling when you shift into gear
- Bogging or hesitation when you open the throttle
- A fuel smell or fuel dripping from the carburetor: do not start the engine, air out the boat and have it checked
- Black smoke or fouled spark plugs
Questions about boat carburetor repair
Why do boat carburetors clog?
Gasoline goes stale when a boat sits, and ethanol blends can leave varnish in the jets. Water in the fuel adds corrosion. Running the engine regularly, using a fuel stabilizer and fitting a fuel water separator all help.
Should I rebuild my carburetor or replace it?
Many carburetors rebuild well. If the body is cracked or badly corroded, we tell you and quote a replacement before any work is done.

#573 Common question asks
Do you offer this service in Newport Beach and Long Beach marinas?
-

Yes. We come to the boat in Long Beach, Newport Beach and our other harbors to diagnose and remove the carburetors, clean and rebuild them at our San Pedro shop, then come back to refit and tune them. A trip fee by distance applies to each visit ($50 to $60 in Long Beach, $110 in Newport Beach). To save the trip fees, bring the carburetors or the boat to our shop.

#571 Common question asks
Do you tune the carburetor after cleaning and rebuilding?
-

Absolutely. After installation, we fine-tune idle speed, mixture screws, and throttle response to match engine specifications. Proper tuning is critical to achieving smooth operation, fuel efficiency, and engine longevity.
-
-

#569 Common question asks
Do you replace internal parts during carburetor rebuilding?
-

Yes. During a rebuild we replace the gaskets, O-rings, needle and seat and any worn parts, using quality rebuild kits. New seals stop the leaks that old, hardened ones cause, and a new needle and seat keep the float bowl from overfilling.
-
-

#567 Common question asks
Can carburetor cleaning fix rough idle and hesitation?
-

Often, yes. Rough idle and hesitation are commonly caused by clogged idle circuits or restricted jets, and cleaning them restores fuel delivery. Ignition faults and air leaks can cause the same symptoms, so we test before we take the carburetor apart.
-
-

#565 Common question asks
Do you completely disassemble the carburetor for cleaning?
-

Yes. We take the carburetor fully apart before cleaning, then clean and inspect every jet, passage and internal part and set the float to the maker's specification during reassembly.
-
-

#563 Common question asks
When should a carburetor be rebuilt instead of just cleaned?
-

A rebuild is recommended when seals, gaskets, needles, or floats are worn or damaged. If the engine has hard starting, fuel leaks, poor idle or uneven RPM, a rebuild with new seals and a new needle and seat usually makes more sense than cleaning alone.
-
-

#561 Common question asks
How do you clean a carburetor, and why not just use a spray cleaner?
-

We take the carburetor fully apart, soak the metal parts in carburetor cleaner and blow compressed air through every jet and passage. A spray from the outside cannot reach the small internal passages where ethanol varnish builds up, which is why a spray alone often does not cure a rough idle.

#559 Common question asks
Do you service multi-carb systems locally in Long Beach and Newport Beach?
-

Yes. We work at your boat from San Pedro and Long Beach to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop. Work at your boat carries a one-way trip fee by distance ($30 in San Pedro up to $110 in Newport Beach; none at the shop), listed on your written estimate.

-

#557 Common question asks
Do you tune carburetors for performance or fuel efficiency?
-

We tune to your goals within the engine maker's specifications: a smooth idle and cruise, better fuel economy or crisp throttle response. Each setup is matched to the engine and how you use the boat.
-
-

#555 Common question asks
How often should multi-carb systems be synchronized?
-

We check synchronization at the yearly tune-up or on the engine maker's schedule, and after any carb cleaning, rebuild, throttle cable replacement or engine modification. Engines used often or under heavy load may need it more often.
