Stop the Leaks. Save Your Steering.
Marine hydraulic steering systems (like SeaStar, BayStar, and Uflex) are robust, but they rely on rubber seals to hold back thousands of pounds of pressure. Over time, saltwater corrosion on the shafts and constant use wear these seals down.
The result is hydraulic fluid leaking onto your expensive teak deck from behind the steering wheel, or an oily mess in the bilge near your engines. More importantly, a leak means air is entering the system, leading to sloppy, unsafe steering control.
Don't Replace—Reseal.
When a steering component leaks, many shops will tell you to buy a brand new one. That gets expensive fast. In most cases, the metal components are fine; only the rubber seals have failed.
We offer a specialized rebuild service that restores your existing parts to like-new condition for a fraction of the replacement cost.
- Helm Pump Reseal: If fluid is dripping from behind your steering wheel, we remove the helm pump, disassemble it, install new shaft and quad seals, and bleed the system.
- Cylinder/Ram Reseal: If the engine-mounted ram is wet, we remove the end glands, inspect the chrome rod for pitting, polish it smooth, and install heavy-duty wiper seals and O-rings.
Signs of Failed Steering Seals
- The "Drip": Persistent dripping of clear or yellowish fluid from directly behind the steering wheel hub.
- Wet Rams: The shiny metal rods on your engine steering cylinder are constantly coated in oil.
- Constant Top-Ups: You frequently have to add fluid at the helm fill port.
- Jerky Steering: Air entering through a leak causes the wheel to feel "lumpy" or skip.
Why Choose Breeze Marine?
- Specialized Tools: We use the correct pin-spanner wrenches and gland nut tools to disassemble these components without damaging the soft aluminum or brass housings.
- Shaft Inspection: A new seal won't last on a corroded shaft. We carefully inspect and polish steering rods to ensure the new seals hold pressure.
- Mobile Service: We come to your boat, remove the leaking component, rebuild it on-site or at our bench, reinstall it, and pressure-bleed the entire system.
