Sterndrive and Outdrive Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro

We repair and service sterndrives, including MerCruiser and Volvo Penta outdrives, at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop.

What the work covers

Bellows, gimbal bearing and lower unit work, gear lube changes included, is done with the boat out of the water: on its trailer, in a storage yard, at our shop or after a haul-out, which is the yard's charge and is listed on your estimate. Parts are quoted with the job, and repairs found during a check are quoted before any work is done.

Signs your outdrive needs attention

  • Milky gear lube, or metal flakes on the drain plug
  • Water in the bilge near the transom
  • A rumble or grinding that changes with engine speed
  • Hard or noisy shifting
  • The drive will not trim up, or slowly drifts down

Questions about outdrive repair

Why is my gear lube milky?

Milky lube means water is getting into the drive, often past a worn seal. A pressure test finds the leak, and a lower unit reseal fixes it. Running the drive with water in the lube wears the gears and bearings.

How often should the bellows be replaced?

Follow your drive maker's interval, and replace them sooner if you see cracks or dry, stiff rubber. A failed bellows can let water into the boat, so they deserve a look whenever the drive is serviced.

Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, where it is kept and what the drive is doing, or call (562) 542-7296.

    #641 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

Do you service all major trim & tilt systems and engine brands?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

Yes, we service trim & tilt systems for Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Volvo Penta, and other major marine engine brands. Both outboard and sterndrive hydraulic trim systems are supported.

  3. User avatar

    #639 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

How long does a trim & tilt hydraulic ram repair usually take?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

The rebuild itself usually takes 2-4 hours of labor; how soon the boat is back in service depends on parts availability and the condition of the rams. We do the work at your boat from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach or at our San Pedro shop, and work at your boat carries a trip fee by distance, shown on your written estimate.

  4. User avatar

    #637 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

What is included in your trim & tilt hydraulic ram repair service?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

We inspect the system, take the rams apart, replace the seals and O-rings, polish or replace the rods as needed, refill with the engine maker's trim fluid and bleed the air. Before we finish, we test that the trim moves smoothly and holds its position.

  5. User avatar

    #635 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

Is it safe to keep using my boat if the trim & tilt is not working properly?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

No, operating a boat with a faulty trim & tilt system can be unsafe. Improper trim affects handling, fuel efficiency, and engine cooling. A sudden failure can also cause the engine to drop unexpectedly, risking damage to the outdrive or transom.

  6. User avatar

    #633 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

Can a leaking trim ram be repaired, or does it need replacement?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

In many cases, leaking trim & tilt hydraulic rams can be rebuilt by replacing seals, O-rings, and worn internal components. If the ram shaft is severely pitted or bent, replacement may be required. We always inspect first and recommend the most cost-effective solution.

  7. User avatar

    #631 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

What are the signs that my trim & tilt hydraulic ram is failing?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

Common signs include hydraulic fluid leaks, slow or uneven trim movement, the engine not holding trim position, or the trim system making unusual noises. If ignored, a failing hydraulic ram can lead to loss of control and further damage to the trim & tilt system.

    #629 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

Do you provide warranty on bellows and gimbal bearing service?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

Yes. Our workmanship is warranted for 90 days from the invoice date, and parts carry their manufacturer's warranty. Your invoice lists the work and the parts for your records.

    #627 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

How long does bellows and gimbal bearing replacement take?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

The labor is usually 4-8 hours for the bellows and gimbal bearing, plus the time to haul the boat out if it is in the water. Corroded parts or other repairs found with the drive off can add time, and we tell you before doing anything extra.

  10. User avatar

    #625 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

Is this service available in the marina or does the boat need to be hauled out?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

The boat has to be out of the water: the drive comes off, and the bellows openings in the transom assembly sit at or below the waterline. We do the job with the boat on its trailer (in your storage yard or at our San Pedro shop), on a lift, or hauled out at a boatyard; haul-out and yard charges are listed on your estimate. We can inspect the bellows in the water first.
