Power Assist Steering Pump Replacement
One-Finger Steering.
High Horsepower.
Turning 600HP of outboard power shouldn't require a gym membership. We diagnose and replace failed electric-hydraulic power assist pumps, restoring the smooth, silent, and effortless steering your boat was built for.
The "Whine of Death"
Is your steering pump screaming when you turn the wheel? A loud, high-pitched whine is the #1 sign of pump motor failure or air cavitation. Ignoring it leads to sudden loss of assist while underway.
High-Current Diagnostics
These pumps draw massive amperage (up to 60A). Before replacing a $2,500 pump, we test your voltage drop, fuses, and relays to ensure the problem isn't just a bad ground or weak battery.
Autopilot Integration
Power assist pumps sit in-line with your autopilot. Replacing them requires careful re-plumbing and purging to ensure your autopilot doesn't get confused by trapped air bubbles or pressure spikes.
The Replacement Protocol.
From heavy to hydraulic heaven.
Electrical Audit
We test the 12V/24V supply under load. Power assist motors are sensitive to low voltage. We verify the "trigger wire" from the ignition is functioning correctly.
Pump Replacement
We remove the old SeaStar or Mercury pump unit (usually buried deep in the console or bilge). We install the new unit with fresh hydraulic fittings.
Power Purge
Installing a new pump introduces air. We use our automated Power Purge machine to circulate fluid through the entire loop (helm, pump, autopilot, engine) until 100% air-free.
Sea Trial
We test the boat on the water, performing hard turns at speed to ensure the assist motor kicks in instantly without lag or noise.
Silent Power.
Expert installation of complex systems.

Common Questions
Why is my steering so heavy?
If the wheel feels "dead" or requires two hands to turn, your power assist pump has likely failed or lost power (blown fuse). Do not operate the boat at high speeds in this condition.
Can these pumps be rebuilt?
Generally, no. They are sealed units containing high-pressure gear pumps and complex electronics. Factory replacement is the only reliable option for safety.
