Boat Water Pump Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro
We repair boat water pumps and cooling systems at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop. An engine that cannot move cooling water will overheat, so a weak pump is worth fixing before it causes damage.
What the work covers
- Raw water pump: a raw water pump rebuild with a new impeller, seals and wear parts as needed.
- Impeller and thermostat: impeller and thermostat service at your engine maker's interval, or sooner if the pump has run dry.
- Circulation pump: circulation pump replacement when the bearing or seal on the engine-driven pump fails.
- Leaks: cooling system pressure testing to find leaks in hoses, heat exchangers and closed cooling systems.
We work on Mercury, MerCruiser, Yamaha, Volvo Penta, Indmar, Yanmar and Cummins engines, and parts are quoted with the job. If the pump checks out and the engine still runs hot, blocked exhaust manifolds or risers are a common cause; see manifold repair.
Signs of a cooling problem
- The temperature gauge climbs, or the overheat alarm sounds
- A weak or missing telltale stream on an outboard
- Steam, or less water than usual, from the exhaust
- Coolant loss, or a drip from the pump
- A squeal from the belt or pump at startup
Questions about boat water pumps
How often should the impeller be replaced?
Follow your engine maker's interval. Replace it sooner if the engine ran without water, even briefly. A dry impeller can lose vanes, and the broken pieces can block the cooling passages.
Can the pump be fixed with the boat in the water?
Pumps mounted on inboard engines can usually be serviced at the slip, with the seacock closed. On outboards and some sterndrives the pump sits in the lower unit or drive, so that job is done with the boat out of the water; a drive is never removed while the boat is in the water.
Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, the engine, where it is kept and what the temperature gauge is doing, or call (562) 542-7296.

#601 Common question asks
Do you provide warranty on impeller replacement service?
-

Yes. Our workmanship is warranted for 90 days from the invoice date, and the impeller carries its manufacturer's warranty. We note the replacement on your invoice for your maintenance records.
-
-

#599 Common question asks
Do you replace impellers dockside or does the boat need to be hauled out?
-

An engine-mounted raw water pump is serviced at the slip. On outboards and sterndrives whose pump sits in the lower unit, the drive comes off, so the boat has to be out of the water: on its trailer, in a storage yard or after a haul-out. Each visit to your boat has a trip fee by distance.

-

#597 Common question asks
Can a broken impeller damage other engine components?
-

Absolutely. If impeller blades break off, they can clog oil coolers, heat exchangers, or engine passages. This often leads to chronic overheating and expensive repairs. Proper inspection and debris removal during replacement is critical to avoid future failures.
-
-

#595 Common question asks
Do you inspect anything else during an impeller replacement?
-

Yes. During the service we inspect the pump housing, wear plate, seals, and cam for damage. We also check for broken impeller vanes in the cooling system, which can block heat exchangers and cause overheating later if not removed.
-
-

#593 Common question asks
What are the warning signs of a failing impeller?
-

Common symptoms include reduced water flow from the exhaust, rising engine temperature, overheating alarms, steam, or a burnt rubber smell. In some cases, an impeller can fail without obvious warning, which is why preventive replacement is strongly recommended.

-

#591 Common question asks
How often should the raw water impeller be replaced?
-

Follow your engine maker's schedule; many call for a new impeller every year or two, and sooner in warm salt water. In Southern California we suggest checking it every year, even if the engine has not overheated.
-
-

#589 Common question asks
What is a raw water impeller and why is it critical for my engine?
-

The raw water impeller is a rubber rotor inside the seawater pump that pulls cooling water from the ocean or lake into your engine. If it fails, the engine can overheat within minutes, leading to serious damage such as warped heads or exhaust system failure. Regular impeller replacement is essential for engine reliability.
-
-

#587 Common question asks
How often should the raw water impeller be replaced?
-

We recommend a new impeller once a year or every 100 hours, whichever comes first, even if the boat sat unused. The rubber vanes take a set and crack with age, and broken pieces can block the heat exchanger.
-
-

#585 Common question asks
Do you replace marine thermostats and circulation pumps if needed?
-

Yes. We replace marine-grade thermostats and circulation pumps using OEM or high-quality equivalent parts. All installations follow manufacturer torque and sealing specifications to ensure proper cooling system performance and long service life.
-
-

#583 Common question asks
How long does an impeller and thermostat service take?
-

An impeller and thermostat service usually takes 2-4 hours of labor, depending on engine access. On sterndrives with the pump inside the drive, the drive has to come off, so the boat must be out of the water. Labor is $150 an hour plus the trip fee for work at your boat, and you get a written estimate before any work starts.
