Boat Starter Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro

We repair boat starters, solenoids and the wiring that feeds them, at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop. That covers outboards, sterndrives, inboards and diesels from Mercury, MerCruiser, Yamaha, Volvo Penta, Indmar, Yanmar and Cummins.

What the work covers

Many no-crank problems start at the battery, the cables or a safety switch. Engine start troubleshooting checks the batteries, battery switch, fuses, neutral safety switch and grounds before any part is replaced.

Gasoline inboards and sterndrives need ignition-protected starters, built so a spark cannot ignite fuel vapor in the engine compartment. Parts are quoted with the job. If the engine cranks well but will not fire, see ignition repair. Weak batteries and charging faults are covered under marine electrical repair.

Signs of a starter problem

  • A single click, or rapid clicking, when you turn the key
  • Slow cranking with a charged battery
  • Grinding or whining while the engine cranks
  • Nothing at all, even with the shifter in neutral
  • The starter keeps running after you release the key. Turn the battery switch off and call us.

Questions about boat starter repair

Why does my starter click but the engine will not crank?

The click is usually the solenoid. If the motor does not spin, the cause is often low battery voltage, a corroded cable end or a bad ground, and sometimes a worn starter.

Should I rebuild my starter or replace it?

Some starters rebuild well with new brushes, bearings or a solenoid, and others are better replaced. We test it first and quote the option that makes sense before any work is done.

Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, the engine, where it is kept and what happens when you turn the key, or call (562) 542-7296.

    #866 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Is there a warranty on the repair?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Repairs are covered by our 90-day workmanship warranty from the invoice date, and replaced parts carry their manufacturer's warranty. A diagnosis is at least $300 for each engine and $300 for the electrical system.

    #864 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Do you provide a report after diagnosing the issue?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes, after troubleshooting, we provide a clear explanation of the cause, recommended repairs, and estimated costs. This helps you make informed decisions and plan further service if required.

    #862 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Is no-start troubleshooting safe for modern engines?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. We follow the engine maker's service-manual test procedures, read fault codes on EFI engines with a scan tool, and do not use jumper wiring or shortcuts that could damage the electronics.

    #860 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Can you start the engine temporarily if parts are needed?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Sometimes. If a safe temporary fix will get you going until the part arrives, such as charging or jump-starting a weak battery or cleaning a corroded connection, we do it and tell you what still needs repair. Safety devices such as the kill switch and the neutral safety switch are never disconnected or defeated; a faulty one is replaced.

  5. User avatar

    #858 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

What are the most common causes of an engine not starting?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Common causes include weak or dead batteries, corroded wiring, faulty starter solenoids, neutral safety switch failures, ignition problems, fuel delivery issues, or ECU-related faults. Our troubleshooting process isolates the issue efficiently.

    #856 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Can you troubleshoot a no-start issue directly at the marina?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. We come to your boat at its slip from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM. Many starting problems can be found and fixed at the dock, often avoiding a tow. A trip fee by distance applies, and a diagnosis is at least $300 for each engine and $300 for the electrical system.

    #854 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

What does no-start engine troubleshooting include?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

No-start troubleshooting finds why the engine will not crank or start. We check the battery, starter circuit, ignition system, safety switches, fuel delivery and engine control components to find the failure, then give you a written estimate for the repair.

    #852 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Do you provide a warranty on solenoid replacement and wiring work?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. Starter solenoids carry their manufacturer's warranty, and our labor and wiring work are warranted for 90 days from the invoice date.

    #850 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Do you use marine-grade parts for solenoid replacement?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. We install marine-grade, ignition-protected starter solenoids built to resist corrosion, vibration and moisture, and seal the connections with adhesive heat-shrink. Automotive solenoids are not ignition protected and are never used on a gasoline boat.

    #848 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Is this service available dockside or in the marina?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. We work at your boat from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, and most solenoid replacements and wiring checks are done at the dock without hauling the boat. A trip fee by distance applies and is shown on your written estimate.
