Marine Transmission Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro

We diagnose and repair marine transmissions on inboard boats, from shifting problems to leaks and noise. We work at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop.

What the work covers

  • Diagnosis and repair: marine transmission repair for slipping, late or harsh engagement, noise and leaks. We check simple causes first, such as low fluid or a linkage problem, since they can feel like a failing gearbox.
  • Rattle at idle: damper plate replacement. The damper plate sits between the engine and the transmission and soaks up vibration. When its springs wear, you hear a rattle or chatter at low RPM.
  • Cooling: gearbox cooler cleaning and a pressure test. A leaking cooler can let seawater into the transmission fluid, or fluid out into the cooling water.

Parts are quoted with the job, and repairs found during a check are quoted before any work is done.

Signs of a transmission problem

  • Slow or no engagement in forward or reverse
  • RPM rises and the boat does not speed up
  • Whining, grinding or a rattle at idle
  • Milky or burnt-smelling transmission fluid
  • Fluid under the gearbox, or a gearbox that runs hot

Questions about marine transmission repair

What causes a rattle at idle?

A worn damper plate is a common cause, especially when the noise fades as RPM rises. Replacing it means separating the transmission from the engine, which is a good time to check alignment as well. See propeller and shaft repair.

Could the problem be the shift cable?

Sometimes. A cable that is stretched or out of adjustment may not move the gearbox lever fully into gear, which feels like a transmission fault. See shift and throttle control repair.

Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, where it is kept and what the transmission is doing, or call (562) 542-7296.

    #1144 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

Will replacing the damper plate eliminate rattling noise?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

If the rattle comes from the damper plate, in most cases yes: a new plate reduces or ends the rattle at idle and smooths gear engagement. Rattle from other sources, such as worn input shaft splines or engine mounts, needs its own repair, which is why we check those too.

    #1142 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

Do you replace the damper plate with OEM or upgraded parts?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

We install OEM or heavy-duty marine-grade damper plates designed for your engine and drive type. Upgraded plates are available for higher torque engines or heavy-use applications.

    #1140 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

How long does damper plate replacement take?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

It depends on engine access and the drive type. Many inboard jobs take about a full day; on a stern drive the engine usually has to come out, which takes longer. We quote the time after an inspection and check the mounts, alignment and coupler parts while it is apart.

  4. User avatar

    #1138 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

How do you confirm that the damper plate needs replacement?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

We inspect for noise patterns, check drivetrain alignment, and verify play between the engine and transmission. In many cases, the damper plate condition can only be confirmed once the transmission is removed.

    #1136 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

Can a bad damper plate damage my transmission?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

Yes. A worn damper plate allows excessive shock to transfer directly into the transmission, which can cause premature wear or failure of internal gearbox components.

    #1134 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

What are the symptoms of a failing damper plate?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

Common symptoms include rattling or clunking noises at idle, vibration when shifting gears, and harsh engagement into forward or reverse. Ignoring these signs can lead to transmission damage.

    #1132 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

What is a damper plate and what does it do?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

A damper plate is mounted between the engine and transmission and absorbs engine vibration and shock. It protects the drivetrain and reduces rattling noises, especially at idle and low RPMs.

    #1130 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

Do you inspect transmission oil during the service?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

Absolutely. We inspect transmission oil for signs of water intrusion or overheating and provide recommendations if fluid replacement or further service is needed.

  9. User avatar

    #1128 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

Can this service extend the life of my marine transmission?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

It helps. Clean cooling passages and a leak-free cooler reduce heat stress and the risk of water in the oil, two common causes of early gearbox failure.

    #1126 Common question asks Dec 20, 2025

How often should a gearbox cooler be cleaned and tested?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 20, 2025

Follow your engine and gearbox maker's schedule. In salt water, have the cooler checked at least once a year, and cleaned and pressure tested sooner if the transmission runs hot or the oil looks milky or dark.
