Marine Generator Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro

We service and repair boat generators at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach. A marine generator is a small diesel or gasoline engine with its own cooling, fuel and electrical systems, and we work on all three.

What the work covers

The generator's raw water pump and impeller wear the same way as the main engine's; see water pump repair. If the generator runs but power does not reach the AC panel, the fault may be in the source selector switch or the wiring, which is part of marine electrical repair. Parts are quoted with the job.

Signs your generator needs attention

  • Hard starting, or it will not start at all
  • It shuts down after running for a while
  • A high temperature alarm, or little water from the exhaust
  • Lights that flicker or dim, or AC power that comes and goes
  • Black smoke, a new knock, or oil or coolant under the unit
  • The CO alarm sounds while it runs. Shut the generator down and get everyone into fresh air.

Questions about marine generator repair

Why does my generator shut itself off?

Most marine generators shut down to protect themselves when they sense high temperature, low oil pressure or a hot exhaust. A worn impeller or a scaled heat exchanger is a common cause. The diagnosis starts with which shutdown tripped and why.

How often should a boat generator be serviced?

Follow the maker's service hours for oil, filters and impeller. A generator that sits for months also needs attention, and running it regularly with some load on it helps keep it in good shape.

Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, the generator make and model, where it is kept and what it is doing, or call (562) 542-7296.

    #796 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Do you inspect other cooling components during descaling?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. We also check raw water flow, hoses, clamps and zinc anodes, and recommend an impeller replacement if needed. We tell you what we found and what we recommend, and nothing extra is done without your OK.

    #794 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Can descaling improve generator performance and reliability?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes, when scale is the problem. Proper cooling reduces engine stress, keeps the operating temperature steady and prevents overheat shutdowns caused by scale during extended use.

    #792 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Is descaling safe for my generator and cooling system?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. We bypass the raw water impeller so it stays out of the cleaning circuit, circulate a biodegradable marine descaler (Barnacle Buster) made to dissolve scale without harming copper, bronze or rubber, and then flush the system with fresh water. On an old heat exchanger, removing scale can expose pinholes the scale was hiding; if we find any, we show you before going further.

    #790 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

What does your heat exchanger descaling service include?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Our service includes isolating the cooling circuit, circulating marine-safe descaling solution, flushing the system thoroughly, inspecting zinc anodes, and verifying proper cooling flow after service.

    #788 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

How often should generator heat exchangers be descaled?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Follow the generator maker's service schedule. Warm salt water and long running hours build scale faster, so a slowly rising operating temperature or weaker water flow at the exhaust is a sign it is due.

    #786 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

What are the signs that my generator heat exchanger needs descaling?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Common symptoms include high generator temperature, reduced water discharge, frequent alarms, or automatic shutdowns. These issues often indicate restricted cooling passages caused by scale or debris.

  7. User avatar

    #784 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

What is generator heat exchanger descaling and why is it necessary?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Heat exchanger descaling removes mineral deposits, salt buildup, and marine growth that restrict water flow. Regular descaling helps prevent generator overheating, improves cooling efficiency, and extends the life of the heat exchanger and generator.

    #782 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Do you provide documentation and warranty for generator service?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. Every service comes with written documentation for your maintenance records. Our workmanship is warranted for 90 days from the invoice date, and parts carry their manufacturer's warranty.

    #780 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Can generator maintenance improve fuel efficiency and reliability?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

It helps. Clean oil, fresh filters and a healthy impeller let the generator run at its normal temperature, and regular service lowers the risk of unexpected shutdowns at anchor. Fuel use depends mostly on the load, so do not expect big fuel savings from service alone.

    #778 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Do you service all marine generator brands?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

We service the common marine generator brands, including Kohler, Westerbeke, Northern Lights, Onan and Fischer Panda. We use the oils, filters and impellers the maker specifies whenever possible.
