Boat Steering Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro

We repair cable, hydraulic and power assist steering on boats from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach. We work at your slip, dock or storage yard, or at our San Pedro shop.

What the work covers

Steering is a safety system. If the wheel binds, slips or feels loose, have it checked before the next trip out. Parts are quoted with the job.

Signs of a steering problem

  • A stiff wheel, or one that binds at one point in its turn
  • Play in the wheel before the boat responds
  • More turns from lock to lock than before
  • Fluid on the helm, the lines or the cylinder
  • A whining or groaning power steering pump

Questions about boat steering repair

Why does my hydraulic steering feel spongy?

Air in the system is the usual cause, often after a repair or a slow leak. A purge and fluid flush clears it. If the air keeps coming back, a seal at the helm or cylinder is likely leaking.

Can a stiff steering cable be saved?

Sometimes cleaning and greasing the cable rod where it slides through the tilt tube is enough to loosen it. If corrosion has spread inside the cable, replacement is the safer repair, since a seized cable can lock the steering.

Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, where it is kept and what the steering is doing, or call (562) 542-7296.

    #682 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

Do you service hydraulic steering systems at the marina?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

Yes. We work at your boat in the harbors from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, and farther on request. The helm or cylinder is removed at the dock and rebuilt on the bench, so the boat usually stays in the water. A trip fee by distance applies and is shown in your written estimate.

    #680 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

How long does steering helm or cylinder seal replacement take?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

A helm or cylinder reseal usually takes 2-4 hours of labor. Complex systems or severe corrosion take longer, and we tell you before any added work. Labor is $150 an hour plus the trip fee for work at your boat, and you get a written estimate before any work starts.

    #678 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

Do you rebuild the steering components or replace them completely?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

Whenever possible, we rebuild steering helms and cylinders using high-quality marine-grade seal kits. If internal damage or corrosion is found, we will recommend replacement and explain all options before proceeding with any work.

    #676 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

What is included in your steering helm and cylinder seal replacement service?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

The service includes removal and inspection of the steering helm or hydraulic cylinder, replacement of all worn or damaged seals, system reassembly, hydraulic fluid refill, air purge, and full operational testing. We check that the steering is smooth and responsive before we hand the boat back.

    #674 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

Is it dangerous to operate a boat with leaking steering seals?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

Yes. Leaking helm or cylinder seals can lead to sudden steering failure, reduced control, and increased risk during docking or high-speed operation. Addressing seal issues early helps prevent complete system failure and costly damage to hydraulic components.

    #672 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

What are the signs that my steering helm or cylinder seals need replacement?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

Common symptoms include stiff or jerky steering, hydraulic fluid leaks near the helm or steering cylinder, excessive play in the wheel, or loss of steering response. Worn seals can allow air into the system or cause pressure loss, which affects steering safety and precision.

Do you offer mobile service at the marina for steering pump replacement?

    1. User avatar

Do you use OEM parts and provide a warranty?

    1. User avatar

Breeze Marine answers Oct 10, 2026

Yes. We install a new pump from the original maker (such as SeaStar or Mercury) or an equivalent unit named in your written estimate. The pump carries its manufacturer's warranty, and our workmanship is warranted for 90 days from the invoice date.

    #667 Common question asks Dec 14, 2025

How long does a power assist steering pump replacement take?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 14, 2025

Most power assist pump replacements take 2-4 hours of labor once the pump is on hand. If we find other problems, such as contaminated fluid or damaged hoses, the job takes longer, and we tell you what we found and get your OK before doing more.
