Exhaust Manifold and Riser Repair in Long Beach and San Pedro

We inspect, repair and replace exhaust manifolds, risers and elbows on inboard and sterndrive engines. We work at your slip, dock or storage yard from Marina del Rey to Newport Beach, or at our San Pedro shop.

What the work covers

On many marine engines, seawater runs through the exhaust manifolds and risers to cool them, then leaves with the exhaust. In salt water these parts corrode from the inside, so they can look fine and still be close to failing.

  • Manifolds and risers: exhaust manifold repair covers inspection, new gaskets, and repair or replacement of corroded manifolds and risers. Parts are quoted with the job.
  • Flappers and shutters: exhaust flapper and shutter service. These valves help stop water from running back into the engine, and they wear out with age.
  • Elbows and cooling: riser and elbow replacement and overheating diagnosis are part of our boat engine repair work.

Signs of a manifold or riser problem

  • Rust streaks or weeping at the manifold or riser joints
  • Overheating, or a hot spot on a manifold or riser
  • Water on the spark plugs, or milky oil
  • Rough running for the first minutes after a start
  • An exhaust smell in the engine compartment or cabin: shut the engine down and get everyone into fresh air

Questions about exhaust manifolds and risers

How often should manifolds and risers be checked?

Follow your engine maker's interval. Boats kept in salt water often need a closer look, since corrosion inside cannot be seen from outside. A check at the annual service is a good habit.

Can a failed riser damage the engine?

Yes. Water that runs back through a failed riser, manifold or gasket can reach the cylinders and rust the valves and rings. Caught early, the fix may be new exhaust parts. Caught late, the engine may need an engine rebuild.

Book a visit: submit a ticket with the boat, where it is kept and what you are seeing, or call (562) 542-7296.

    #964 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Can servicing the exhaust flapper improve engine performance?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Only if the flappers were causing a problem. A burnt flapper blocking the pipe raises back pressure and can make the engine run hot and lose power, so replacing it brings exhaust flow back to normal. Flappers in good condition do not add performance; their job is to help keep water out.

    #962 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Do you provide replacement parts for the flapper and shutter?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. We supply and install OEM or OEM-spec flappers, often the maker's updated design with better heat resistance, along with new gaskets. Parts carry their manufacturer's warranty.

    #960 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

How often should I service my exhaust flapper and shutter?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Follow the engine maker's service schedule, and have them checked whenever the elbows or the drive come off and after any overheating, because heat is what burns them. Boats in saltwater or high-use conditions may need more frequent checks.

    #958 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

What is included in your flapper and shutter service?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

We remove the exhaust elbows or, on some engines, the drive (with the boat out of the water) to reach the flappers, also called shutters. We check them and their mounting holes, replace worn or burnt flappers and any other parts you approve, reassemble with new gaskets, and run the engine to check for leaks and noise.

    #956 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Can a faulty exhaust shutter cause engine overheating?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Yes. A burnt flapper can fall down the Y-pipe and block the exhaust, and the back pressure makes the engine run hot. A missing flapper causes a different problem: it lets water surge up the exhaust into the engine.

    #954 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

How do I know if my exhaust flapper needs servicing?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

You usually cannot see them without taking the exhaust apart. Warning signs are a loud clacking from the exhaust at idle (worn flappers), an engine that runs hotter than usual (a burnt flapper blocking the pipe), or water in the oil or cylinders. We inspect them for burns, tears and free movement.

    #952 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

What is an exhaust flapper and why is it important?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

An exhaust flapper or shutter prevents water from entering the engine through the exhaust system while allowing gases to escape. A malfunctioning flapper can cause water intrusion, engine damage, and poor performance.

  8. User avatar

    #942 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Do you perform inspections on all engine components?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

We check the fuel, cooling, lubrication and electrical systems from the outside for wear, corrosion and leaks, and scan EFI engines for stored fault codes. It is a maintenance check, not an internal engine inspection; anything that needs attention is reported to you with a price before any work.

  9. User avatar

    #940 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

Why is annual engine maintenance important?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

Annual maintenance lowers the risk of a breakdown on the water and helps the engine last. Oil, impellers and anodes wear even when the boat sits, and regular checks catch small problems before they become costly repairs.

  10. User avatar

    #938 Common question asks Dec 16, 2025

What is included in a 100-hour service for my boat engine?

    1. User avatar

Fryderyk Florczak answers Dec 16, 2025

A 100-hour service covers engine oil and oil filter, fuel filters and water separator, the raw-water impeller (inspected or replaced), lower unit gear lube or transmission fluid, zinc anodes and, on gasoline engines, spark plugs, plus a fault-code scan on EFI engines, a check of belts, hoses and electrical connections, and a test run. The exact list follows your engine maker's schedule, and parts are itemized in your written estimate.
